On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

A Historic Mayor

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
