US Military Operation on Venezuela Fuels Anxieties of Future Danish Territory Acquisition.

The latest American strike in Venezuela and the detention of its leader have renewed unease regarding America's designs on the Arctic territory. Followers of the ex-president's political movement have reportedly turned their attention to the resource-rich island in the wake of the operations in South America.

Inflammatory Messages and Official Outrage

Only hours after the commencement of the Venezuelan operation, a prominent conservative commentator, who is the spouse of a senior presidential aide, shared a suggestive image. The graphic depicted Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, accompanied by cryptic message: "SOON."

This blatant threat to absorb the mineral-rich region, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, provoked swift and strong condemnation from Danish representatives.

"Denmark and the US are close allies and should continue to cooperate as such. American security is also the Arctic's and Denmark’s security," declared the Danish ambassador to the United States. "Our nation and the US work together to guarantee security in the North."

The diplomat additionally highlighted that Denmark had significantly increased its military budget this year, earmarking a substantial sum expressly for Northern and regional security. "And yes, we expect full respect for the sovereign borders of the our realm," he emphasized.

Administrative Moves and Strategic Interests

The tensions were additionally exacerbated by the recent appointment of a US state governor as a representative to Greenland. The appointee had openly expressed gratitude to the commander-in-chief, saying it was an "honour" to work in a unpaid capacity to "bring Greenland into the US."

After the events in Venezuela, this envoy commended the president's decisive move, linking it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Ever since returning to office, the American leader has consistently alarmed European allies with his stated interest in Greenland. The territory is viewed as vitally important for national security and potential mineral exploitation. It currently houses the most northerly US air base.

Refusing to Rule Out Military Action

In a significant television appearance, the leader declined to rule out the resorting to armed action to acquire Greenland. This stance comes during growing global competition in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He described Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll value them... But we need that for international security."

Growing Friction and Local Resistance

In reaction to this constant "rhetoric" of threats, Denmark's security agency took the unprecedented step last month of classifying the United States as a "security risk."

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland issued a unified and forceful rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland reveals a nuanced sentiment. While a overwhelming percentage of the territory's inhabitants seek independence from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously little to no desire to join the United States. The island has had the option to declare independence for many years.

Expert Assessment: A Plausible Scenario?

Some analysts are increasingly reconsidering the likelihood of such a action. One policy director focusing in military analysis admitted she had once discounted the rhetoric but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to deploy a few hundred or a few thousand soldiers on Greenland, and it's not clear to me who could do anything about it," she observed.
