The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
